If I were in your place (literally!) I'd never in my life miss out on catching 881 in theatres.
For one, to honour my fav director and his latest piece of work. Secondly, the story: marginal and glorious, an unbeatable combination.
Internationally they'll label it “exotic” but I'd be in for something weirdly familiar, my guess.
Next, it would sure safe me from understanding too much, too little, whatever.
And then, for once in your notoriously chilly cinemas I wouldn't be in danger of freezing to the heart, right?!

But aye, wake up man and face it: you won't be able to catch 881 just so soon. And that's for the simple reason of my being moored in Berlin as it is. No time, no money to make it over, therefore all this is truly would-be talk. So all the rest of you, now you know why you HAVE to go there yourself- and in part, also, on my behalf... thanks :) top

The Reason why?. still have to ask?. hahaha.. Well, basically this show trailer already good enough to encourage people to watch it. Getai has been around with us since long time ago, but hardly people will see it at movies, so is a new kind of experience that singaporean should go and watch. Other point!.. Royston Tan!. His movies is good!!!.. Been watching his show, i believe he will make this movie a good worth to watch too. When i watched this preview i didnt know it was Royston tan movie, and i was saying to my friend that this going to be a nice and interesting show, must watch!. who knows it turn out to be his!. so singaporean!. agree with me and must watch!!..

i want to watch 881 because:

i want to know what "techno cat" means
i want to learn how to sing hokkien songs
i want to see flying papayas
i also want to see durians prancing around on stage
i want to find out why ghosts are so attracted to getais - is it because of loud songs or because of hot girls in skimpy costumes
i want to see if the film managed to accidentally capture any spirits during the making of the show.
i want to see if there's anymore lucky number in the show - 881 is one number short for 4D
i want to spot any royston tan cameos, if any.
i want to see which of the girls has the biggest papayas (or durians).
i want to research more on my future prospects as a male cross-dressed getai performer
i want to see the biggest star of the show as featured in the middle of the poster - the chicken

    well done, royston!

Why will I want to catch 881 when it is released in the theatres on
    09th August 2007?

    Dear Bodyguard,

I have been following Royston's films ever since he started out with 15. I realise everyone has his own path to success and we must do all we can to realise it. Royston is a very visually sensitive director with a keen eye for detail and the ability to bring out the best in his actors. His movies are very heartwarming and they never fail to connect with the audience as they always seek to tell a story which
    most can relate to.
I like the subtleness in his films which are very
thought provoking and poignant at times. I always believe a good movie is one which not only appeals to your senses and moves your soul but also one which leaves an impact on you and changes the way you view
this world and its inhabitants. Royston's films has never failed to do that, time and time again. I have been inspired to become a good film-maker and director someday and even a better person at large, not for the applause of the world but for the realisation of a dream, to touch lives and make this world a better place through the power of a
    good film.

I am very certain 881 will not only not disappoint but will take the local cinematic industry to even greater heights. For my favourite and Singapore's Number 1 director, I will say yes. For the support of great local films, I will say yes. For another visual treat and life changing experience, I will say yes. Yes! to the catching of 881 when it is released in the theatres on National Day 09th August 2007.
Hmm... can't wait.. now if only I have the tickets to the gala
    premiere...

    Thanks and Regards,

    “Getai, Getai”

What is Getai???? I don’t know.
Mummy has never brought me to one.
    From trailer I see @-@
    Sexy, skimpily-dressed ladies,
    Adding liveliness to the glittered,
    elaborately decorated stage
    with Hokkien songs
    in the 7th lunar month.
    So G L A M O R O U S!
    Got ‘Papaya’,
    Got ‘Durian’,
    But don’t see any!
    Got ‘Scolding’,
    Got ‘Fighting’
    Also got ‘干爹’
    Hah!!! What a nice mixture.

Want to know what ‘881’ is all about.

    “GETAI OF COURSE”

    A MUST WATCH MOVIE.

So see “8 8 1” starting 9 August, directed by the most favoUred & famous Royston Tan – again bringing out his uniqueness in this movie.

Behind the glitz of fairy lights you see on the getai stage and the glamour of Papaya Sisters' techno-chic costumes lie a flood of tears, sweat and blood left behind by a very dedicated crew. From the outdoor shoots, the Braddell set, the warehouse (which was dreadful. just dreadful.), to the one week of insomniac overnight getai shoot at Turf City; every single moment was an adrenaline rush.

Everyone ran in between takes. Smoking breaks were never complete because the next minute you take in a huff your name would be screamed at to do something; fix the ping pong light, lower the disco ball, bring the chicken in, make everything tackier and louder-than-thou. It was emotional at some point, tiring even. Mentally and physically exhausting. Yet spirits remained high. Ling-ling Jie always made us laugh. She really had me in awe with her zest for life, her professionalism as a performer and her earnestness.

Let the poetic nuances of the songs draw you in. I never really understood completely what those Hokkien lines meant until Yann-yann and Ling-ling Jie translated it to me. The songs are the very soul of the film. They are simple lines, really. About life, friendship, relationships. love. Yet they are simple enough to send tear ducts bursting, to make you smile, to make you nod in agreement. That was what I felt to listen to the same songs over and over again on set. They make you feel even more, with every listen.

I'm blessed to be part of this tribute to the local getai scene, and to be working on the 881 set is an experience I can't exchange anything for. This is the quintessential boot camp to Singapore filmmaking. top

881! Truth to be told, I don't really watch artistic films. In fact, I don't think I've ever watched one before. I guess that would be because most artistic films are rated, and I'm only 15. However, I'm very interested in the upcoming film.

Firstly, although the movie does seem rather heartland with the warbling of getai songs and flashy costumes, I believe that it can shed some light on the fascinating lives of getai performers, and how they differ from other performers. Getai is essentially very much a part of Singapore's culture, that's an undeniable fact. And in the film shots I see some raw emotion and I from what is shown in trailers so far, the plot looks pretty good. Simple, but well constructed.

Secondly because it is produced locally, and I feel that it is important to support local talent and hopefully encourage them and spur them on to greater heights. Never look down on Singaporeans!

Thirdly, because Royston Tan is indeed an inspiration to me. To achieve so much, he must have creativity and art coming out of his ears. Art and beauty, that are celebrations of life.

    Here's to 881(:

hihi, i wanted to watch the movie 881 because i feel that it is a movie with a rather unique theme to it - getai. getai is an essential part of Singapore's culture, i believe. It's an annual phenomenon rarely seen in other parts of the world. kudos to Director Royston Tan for bringing this element of Singapore onto the big screen! this, i feel, is the best present to all Singaporeans on our 42nd National Day, haha..even the debut of the movie is timed in nicely with this year's NDP!! =D YAY!! Great job Director!! im attracted to this movie not only because of the theme's uniqueness but also because, i believe that Royston Tan will surprise us (and me ^^)again with his flair for directing and creativity through his latest film 881. I've never understood getai & what it stood for. to me, it was always just plain noise pollution. so maybe through the film.. I can get a glimpse beneath the surface & see what charm getai holds. and anyway, i'm just happy that i can get a local film that's not directed by Jack Neo. >.<

no need to look forward to it, because I just watched it and I was touched to tears with the ending.

Of course, it's been already been said countless times that this is a truly unique Singaporean experience, where you can get no where else in the world. I agree and I think we should all embrace it.

I've never been a fan of Hokkien Getai or hokkien-speakers for that matter. I always find it crude and brash, and it doesn't help that it's held at my void deck every other year! (so noisy!)

After watching the movie, all I can say is that I've a new found respect for this Hokkien-spouting singers with a drag-queen sense of fashion. I'm even going to go get myself a soundtrack and familarise myself with the Hokkien ditties!

So it's the first day of the Hungry Ghost Festival tmrw, and well, I never thought I'll say it but the movie made me want to go downstairs and sing along to the songs. Maybe I might even enjoy it!

Great gaudy (in a good way!) movie that is true to the culture but not the reality (laser shooting durian bras?), which I'll give 6 stars out of 5, if possible.

    Great job Royston! :D

    Hi,

Why should we watch this show?

Well, firstly it's a local production and I have always been a fan of films produced or directed by famous Singaporean directors/producers. To add icing on to the cake, it's a Royston Tan production, a must see!

Secondly, this show speaks so much of Singaporean culture, something unique and we should be proud of. Growing up in a country with different races living together this show brings out just one of the many flavours of Singapore. One that almost everyone(regardless of race) that grew up in Singapore would be familar with. A sudden change in atmosphere in the 'getai' market will definitely rise and the singers would definitely feel a sense of hope from now. It is the local version of Moulin Rouge!

Thirdly, the show also bring out the values of love and loyalty amongst family and friends. The importance of these values were reflected strongly in this movie and it leaves one to wonder if they live their lives with such principles in them.

Lastly, I just watched this show (for the 2nd time!) with a colleague whose birthday just past and I haven't gotten any present for her. This would be the ideal present because she's dying to get the poster!

More films like this should be produced and may the local movie industry be more recognised for their excellent productions!

    Cheers,

I was involved in a hungry ghost fest research project last year and i am extremely intrigued by how exciting an event like this can be for organisers and attendees every year. Especially the getai, which can attract people from all over the island just to catch a particular singer sing/host that evening.

Watching 881 is part of expanding my interest and love for the getai culture.

This is just so UNIQUELY singapore!

Sorry but reality hurts. I dunno who is Royson till this movie. And I will not 拍马屁 about lookin' forward to your movie or how good is it.

The reason that I watch the movie was because its the first moive my parent wanted to watch...so I treat it as a whole family event. First time in our lifes, watching a movie together. Partly also, the theme song, keep hearing it on the radio. its nice. 伍家辉 - 一人一半. Although, generally I dislike hokkien music. I'm surprise that most of the song sounds alrite to me. I think music is really plays an important role for a movie. Alot of us cry after watching. Touched! GOOD JOB! top

Oh, i jus caught 881 few hrs ago. It is sucha GREAT movie! It is humourous, glamourous and touching. It is really one great production. I cant imagine how much hard work the production crew has to go through to arrange the costumes, actresses learning to sing the hokkien songs (which seemed so cheem), doing research on the various getai "rules", etc etc. I'm just so awed by the hard work and impressed with this GREAT production! Kudos!

It is one movie, any sngaporean of any age grp can appreciate. I think i'm gonna catch it a second time, with my mummy this time. :) top

I was involved in the hungry ghost festival research project last year as a photographer for my prof.
I didn't get to shoot much of the getai performances and the photos I took were not meant for myself.
After watching the film, I'm inspired to go around Singapore once again to capture images relating to the Hungry Ghost Festival, especially the local getai scene.
Thank you for the wonderful production. The film is really good :) top

Don't misunderstand. I think twice before buying because I'm thinking, "hmm, should I buy 1 or 2?"

    HUAT AHH!

Cos it was an awesome movie and superb soundtrack!!! (And I bought only 1 cos I'm rather tight on budget)

    HUAT AHH!

I watched the movie on 9th August and only bought the soundtrack recently cos was rather busy. All I can say is, both the movie and the soundtrack, NICE!

    HUAT AHH!

It's been a long time since I bought a CD album (i'm ashamed). And even longer if you asked me when I bought a local CD (even more ashamed). The reason is, I can hear the songs repeating on radio stations till I got sick of it and thus, don't have the need to purchase the CD. Whereas in this case, it's impossible for radio stations to play HOKKIEN 'GUA' (songs).

    HUAT AHH!

Royston, good work in this movie. I've enjoyed it and can't wait for the VCD/DVD to be released so I can watch it again with my parents. I'm looking forward for your next production too!

    HUAT HUAT HUAT AHHH!!!

881 is a splndid movie, and it actually tells people the tradition in Singapore:Getai in the 7th month. In 881, hokkien was used, and it also passes a message to the audiences that english and chinese or other languages are not the only language that we can use, we can also use hokkien!

    HUAT AH !

881 is also a very touching movie that made all the audience cried , including me.881 also tells us how interesting is getai.

    HUAT AH !

Lastly,881 is a super nice movie! Go and watch it:D

I have Been looking 4ward to Royston's 881 since last year after the Sin Sai Hong World Premiere,I agree to the trailer:The Most Anticipated movie of the year.
This Movie is also in commemoration of 陈金浪's 1st Death anniversary and also the 1st Getai Movie to be shown on the Ghost Festival period. It has so many 1st,That's why I am looking 4ward to catch it.And also I am a superfan of Royston, and I will want to catch the movie on the Singapore's 42nd Birthday as part of my Family's Celebration

    To further add on...

After watching Royston's interview on Channel 8's Website...I am even tempted to catch the roadshows and also the movie...Esp the chicken in the movie. The costumes are rather nice and also would want to see the fight between Papaya and Durian like the rest of the people here...
    To Further Further Add ON!!!
heard 881 is entering Golden Horse Award...I am totally Elated!!!not only the minor nominations...but 14 nomination will be involved...

Heard the OST 2 is releasing soon...as the FM is busying with...and the Soundtracks are selling hot off the shelf!!!

With the achievement and also the first Getai movie produced...and also whopping 2.5 Million earned in the box office in 3 weeks...It's wonderful feat...

And also hope it will be my Bdae Present 4 this year!
