SINGAPORE: The names read off like the global film market’s Who’s Who at the 12th Shanghai International film festival.

Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle is presiding over a jury for the festival top honours - the Golden Goblet Awards - with American actress Andie MacDowell, Infernal Affairs director Andrew Lau and Swiss director Xavier Koller (Journey of Hope).

And Singapore’s having a say as well - film-maker Royston Tan is serving time as a jury member for the Asian New Talent Award 2009.

The youngest jury member in the history of the film festival, which concludes Sunday, Tan joined a panel headed by South Korean film-maker Im Kwon-taek, alongside Chinese actress Yu Nan, Chinese director Zhu Wen and Thai director Nonzee Nimibutr.

Another Singaporean, Boi Kwong, is up for the New Talent award for his Ah-Beng cautionary gang flick The Days.

“I think it’s a great honour to be able to pair up with Im Kwon-taek, a veteran director who has made 10 over films!” the 32-year-old director told TODAY.

“And even though all of us (the jury members) had differences, the fact that we had a common goal to discover new talent is amazing.”

When asked to share a memorable experience during China’s only international movie competition, Tan said there was one highlight on top of mingling with stars like Boyle and MacDowell.

“There were tons of Chinese who actually sang along during the 12 Lotus screening. I was really happily surprised!”

BEIJING -- Thesps Andie MacDowell and Komaki Kurihara, helmers Andrew Lau, Xavier Koller and Huang Jianxin and South Korean producer Oh Jung-wan will join Danny Boyle on the jury for the Golden Goblet Award, the organizing committee of the 12th Shanghai International Film Festival said.

The jury will judge 16 films from 16 territories competing for the Golden Goblet at the fest, which runs June 13-21.

Some 1,925 films will unspool at the event, which offers a platform for Chinese auds to see movies outside the 20 or so foreign pics normally permitted into China. Of these, more than 200 have not been released internationally and around a third are marking their international or Chinese debuts.

Competition pics are: "We Can Do That" by Giulio Manfredonia and "Schemes of Affection" by Dodo Fiori, both from Italy; Emmanuel Finkiel's "Nowhere Promised Land" and Andre Techine's "The Girl on the Train," both from France; "Aching Hearts" by Nils Malmros from Denmark; Swedish-Danish pic "Original" by Antonio Tublen and Alexander Brondsted; Germany-Cyprus-Greece co-production "Small Crime" by Christos Georgiou; "A Piece of Me" by Christoph Roehl from Germany; "Romance" by Guel Arraes from Brazil; "Rough Cut" by Jang Hun from Korea; "Splinters" by Maciej Pieprzyca from Poland; "Chameleon" by Krisztina Goda from Hungary; "Normal" by Julius Sevcik from the Czech Republic; "Soul Searching" by Wanma Caidan from China; "The Storm in My Heart" by Pal Jackman from Norway; and Yao Shuhua's mainland China-Hong Kong-Taiwan co-production "Empire of Silver."

Tang Lijun of the organizing committee said the jury for the Asian New Talent Award, a competition that aims to discover Asia's next generation of film talent, would be Chinese thesp Yu Nan, Chinese helmer Zhu Wen, Singaporean director Royston Tan; and Thai filmmaker Nonzee Nimibutr. South Korean filmmaker Im Kwon-taek will be the jury president.

Stephen Daldry, who directed "The Reader," has been invited to talk at the fest.

ONE of the best decisions I made in my life was to study philosophy at the then University of Singapore. Though I had to repeat a year in order to switch courses, it turned out to be a hugely beneficial decision because it armed me with one of the most powerful weapons developed by mankind: logic.

I discovered the power of logic when I served at the United Nations. Logic travels well across cultures and languages. A logical argument in one culture is equally logical in another culture, just as mathematical truths are equally valid in all cultures.

In 1979, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. Cuba supported it; Singapore opposed it. Hence, we had fierce arguments with Cuba in numerous multilateral fora. In the end, what helped us was a simple rule of logic: All specific propositions can be universalised. Hence, if you argue a specific case, you have to accept the universal rule that goes with it.

(Interestingly, the principle of universalisability of moral statements was propagated by British philosopher R.M. Hare in his book, The Language Of Morals. Most of this book was written on toilet paper while Hare was imprisoned by the Japanese in Changi Prison during World War II. Singapore, one might say, has a proprietary interest in the principle of universality.)

I put across this simple logical argument to the Cubans: You argue that it is legitimate for the Soviet Union to invade Afghanistan. The universal consequence of this argument is that it is legitimate for major powers to invade small states. If you accept this universal rule, it means that it will also be legitimate for the United States to invade Cuba.

The Cubans were mad as hell when we made this argument because they could not argue against the logic. Even the Iranians - who were as anti-American as the Cubans - told us that we were logically correct.

The same power of logic can be applied to all other disputes. For example, some members of the Anglican Church of Our Saviour have argued that it is legitimate for their members to take over the secular organisation, Aware, because Aware was supporting activities they considered to be against their religious principles. Their pastor Derek Hong was quoted saying: 'It's not a crusade against the people but there's a line that God has drawn for us, and we don't want our nation crossing that line.' He later expressed his regret for saying this.

The universal application of this argument is that it is legitimate for religious organisations to take over secular organisations if these secular organisations violate their religious principles. Let us now try a logical extension of this argument by imagining the following scenario.

Imagine that there is a religious organisation in Singapore which believes that it is immoral for teenage girls to be forced to expose their arms, legs and faces when they go to school. They say: 'There's a line that God has drawn for us, and we don't want our nation crossing that line.' Hence, since the teachers of Singapore are enforcing the rule, this religious organisation marshals its members, takes over the Singapore Teachers' Union and uses it to advocate the argument that female teenagers should be 'free' to choose whatever dress they want to wear to school. They argue that it is wrong to impose the corrupt Western school uniforms on young women of their religion.

Please note that the above is not a hypothetical example. This argument over school uniforms has been played out in France. Should we allow this to happen in Singapore too?

The people who led the takeover of Aware did not realise that they were pushing a rule that could undermine the delicate social and political fabric of Singapore. There is one simple political reality that many Singaporeans have not fully absorbed. It is not normal for multi-ethnic, multicultural and multi-religious societies to live in relative harmony. Indeed, virtually all the multi-ethnic former British colonies have failed to preserve ethnic harmony after gaining independence. Look at the cases of Guyana, Cyprus, Sri Lanka and Fiji.

Singapore is the exception to the rule. What principles explain its success? One key principle has been the principle of secularism. There is a place for religion in society and there is a place for politics in society. Both should stay in their respective spheres. Many societies have come to grief because religion has been used as a force in politics. And Singapore will definitely come to grief if religion enters the political sphere here. As Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng put it emphatically last week: 'Keeping religion and politics separate is a key rule of political engagement.'

This is why we should be aware (pardon the pun) that the Aware saga is not just about one organisation; it is also about the larger principles that allow Singapore to survive and not fall into the same fate as other failed multi-ethnic communities.

One reason why Singapore has done well so far is that we had exceptionally wise founding fathers. One of them was the late S. Rajaratnam. He was a fierce defender of secularism. Shortly after independence in 1965, he drafted the National Pledge, which speaks of Singaporeans as 'one united people, regardless of race, language or religion'.

One simple solution for Singapore's long-term survival is to create a firewall - a thoroughly impregnable firewall - between the religious space and the secular space in Singapore society. However, when I proposed this simple solution in the draft version of this article to my friends, I received a blizzard of comments stressing that it would be very difficult, in practical terms, to create such a firewall. I agree. It will be very difficult. But if we fail to build and maintain such a firewall, dealing with the consequences of allowing religion to enter the secular space here will be more difficult.

In some areas of life, there are no easy solutions. There may only be solutions that require vision, courage and wisdom to implement. Hence, we should not underestimate the challenges of preserving secularism in Singapore.

I refer to the letter by Amy Chua, 'Why Ban on Brides, Boy' (Life Mailbag, April 11).

In the letter, the Board of Film Censors attempted to justify its ban of the film 'Brides of Allah' on account of it being 'sensitive'. It claimed that the female terrorists interviewed in the documentary 'did not seem to be remorseful and were determined to perpetrate acts of violence should they have another opportunity'. The Board was concerned on the effect of such a film on 'those who are like-minded'.

This line of reasoning seems to me to be tenuous at best. There are many documentaries which portray all manner of sociopaths and deviants—including unrepentant criminals, racial supremacists and homophobic bigots. Just because they are allowed their points of view does not mean that the documentary, as a whole, necessarily endorses their perspectives. It is a grave disservice to refer to the warped ideology articulated by these terrorists as 'the documentary's distorted view of Islam'. This 'distorted view' is one held by the interviewees, and do not necessarily reflect those of the filmmaker.

As a matter of fact, it has to be noted that the filmmaker herself is an Israeli female director, who professes at most a curiosity towards, rather than an admiration for, these female terrorists. A review of the documentary on the Hollywood Reporter states that 'this is a film ripe with ambiguity, neither wholly sympathetic nor wholly judgmental about the subjects’. It takes a paranoiac leap of the imagination to interpret the film as one that 'provides a platform for terrorists to champion their cause'.

Likewise, FIPRESCI film critic Pablo Utin expresses his bewilderment at the actions of these Palestinian women. In his review, he asks, 'How can a mother abandon her kids and husband and go to kill others by committing suicide? How can a pregnant woman put an explosive belt around her belly, right on top of her unborn son?' Chris Barsanti of filmcritic.com concludes that 'some of these supposed martyrs...are nothing more than homicidal maniacs given a pass by a handily convenient ideology.' None of the reviews I have read identified the film as pro-terrorist propaganda which in the Board's own words, 'portray[s] terrorists or terrorist organisations in a positive light'.

By banning the documentary, the Censorship Board assumes that a typical Singaporean filmgoer is bereft of what it patronizingly describes as ‘a discerning and mature mind’ (even after having passed 21 years of age) and is unable to reach some of the conclusions I have outlined above. More worrying is the idea that terrorists are not supposed to communicate the reasons for their chosen course of action, or rather, that the public should be shielded from their testimonies.

There are supposed proto-terrorists now who are languishing under indefinite detention at the Whitley Detention camp. Until today, the public has yet to hear their side of the story. Denied a fair and open trial as well as access to the media, these prisoners have been effectively silenced. This veritable gag order, however, is not in the national interest. Public education on the dangers of terrorism must include an avenue where these 'terrorists' are allowed to make a statement on their motivations and justifications, and to defend themselves against the evidence laid against them.

The Nuremberg trials, which allowed Nazi war criminals to testify in court, was an exemplary case in point. Despite fierce attempts by the Nazis to exonerate themselves, it was clear from those who witnessed the proceedings that the atrocities they had committed were patently indefensible. The Censorship Board, by banning ‘Brides of Allah’, has not only failed to recognize its pedagogical value, but has squandered an invaluable opportunity to educate the public on the multifaceted causes of terrorism.

Singapore, 24 February 2009 – The 22nd edition of the Singapore International Film Festival will take place from 14 to 25 April 2009, screening close to 200 films from over 30 countries. The films were selected from 1,056 entries received by the Festival. This year, audiences can look forward to a wide selection of fresh, bold and award-winning films, as well as newly introduced open-air screenings and late night weekend screenings. The Festival will include two tributes honouring 25 Years of the Thai National Film Archive and the Amos Gitai Retrospective. Films shown from the stellar Israeli filmmaker, Amos Gitai, will include his latest One Day You’ll Understand (2008) and Disengagement (2007) which stars Juliette Binoche.

A new section, the Singapore Film Awards has been added to the Silver Screen Awards to spotlight the talents from our growing Singapore film industry. Singapore feature-length films (with a minimum of 60 minutes in duration) completed and screened in the previous calendar year are eligible for nomination in the awards categories of Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Performance and Best Cinematography.

12 Lotus is nominated under four categories and up for five awards including Best Film, Best Director (Royston Tan), Best Performance (Liu Ling Ling, Qi Yu wu) and Best Cinematography (Alan Yap).

SIFF received over ninety submissions this year, and nine finalists were selected. The finalists will compete in the awards categories of Best Film, Best Director, Best Performance, Best Cinematography, and Special Mention. The Singapore Short Film Competition shortlist panel are Royston Tan (Filmmaker/ Director, 1028), Juan Foo (Executive Producer for Content Development, The Shooting Gallery Asia) and Kristin Saw (Management Executive, Singapore Film Commission).

In an exclusive interview with the bodyguard, Royston commented that he was "excited to see the new wave of talents". He added, "While varying in style, I noticed a significant number of original works which I find very refreshing". Asked if there were any films he saw that stood out? "There is but I really cannot say as it will affect the judging," Royston said.

SINGAPORE: In an interview last year, Singapore’s favourite “bad-boy” film-maker Royston Tan told TODAY that 2009 was going to be a year of rest for him. Apparently, “rest” in this self-confessed Ah Beng’s vocabulary means “direct a stage musical”.
And not just any musical, but one starring another famous beng — Broadway Beng, that is.
“Selena (Tan, Dim Sum Dolly and founder of Dream Academy) called me up and asked if I was interested. She felt I could add freshness to the show,” the 881 and 12 Lotus director told TODAY at the Dream Academy press conference held at Clarke Quay on Friday.
“I actually took two weeks to decide! But I’ve always been a big fan of Broadway Beng, so I knew I most likely would say yes,” he added, with a laugh.
In his first stage-directing gig of his career (but not his first foray into theatre having played multi-media designer for Drama Box’s A Stranger at Home in 2006), the 32-year-old will mount the fourth instalment of Broadway Beng, titled Broadway Beng! Jiak Liu Lian!, at the Esplanade on December 3.

All that could be recorded in a futile attempt for an update by Royston Tan was "its -5 degrees celcius here!" repeatedly. Speculations have arised over Royston's lack of response as it is believed the freezing temperature in Berlin has forced him to put on thick ear muffs which explains the above situation. However, a statement was forced out of insider rtbg, in which he was quoted saying, "I have intelligence to prove Royston's lack of response is due to him being very busy learning how to build a snowman."

150 students from the media studies and management diploma course were in attendance as Royston Tan delivered his first school talk of the new year. In a cosy lecture hall setting, Royston Tan showcased two of his short films, After The Rain and D.I.Y, both being commissioned projects. Royston said, "I thought that it was a different session today in that I talked more about the flip side of film making." The students experienced first hand insights to various aspects of filmmaking and answers to a wide array of queries, which included never before made known pieces of information. In reference, he added that "the personal sacrifices and the difficulties" were not topics that he talked about in depth during previous showcases.

Sorry that I pasted this blog on both my blog sites, but it's coz the on going survival of this movie 12 Lotus needs everyone's support, so 2 blogs are errr better than one. So I whack here too!!!
Actually, my header for this post was supposed to be HEEELLPPP!!!! As the 12 Lotus box office so far has been quite dismal, some blame it on the Olympics making people stay at home, some people blame it for the timing being one week late as a result, not being in line with the seven month activities…

And of coz, some just simply didn't really like the film. Actually I remember when I watched this movie, I was thinking to myself, oh nooo…Oh no not becoz it's not nice, oh no is coz it's not as commercial as 881. I remembered having this conversation with Roy and 600, I told them, it's very intense, not as commercial, but then again, with 881 making the 1st commercial headway into the hearts of the err…heartlands. It might bring the mainstream buying audience to challenge themselves to up a step into something more deep. But then again, it's a 'might' hence everyone is worried.

Some also commented that this time, the movie has too much music…To that, I find it amusing, the movie is not called a musical for nothing. It's a musical of coz shld have a lot of music what?!!?!? hahhahaha…No music, then what?

Some also said that the movie is slow, to that, I feel actually the music is part of the plot, it's actually contributing to the momentum of the movie together with the main spoken plot, taking that in mind, I actually don't feel that the movie is that slow. Actually I feel the reason why I respect Roy for making the movie 12 Lotus as how it is, coz he clearly doesn't wanna be pigeonholed. He wants to take a step up. Remember there used to be a time where U would watch a Stephen Chow movie just becoz it's a Stephen Chow movie? where U expect EXACTLY what's gonna happen and U laugh at all the slapstick stuff and go home entertained with no surprises? Even Mr Chow has moved away from that direction, times are changing, the world is maturing and though it might not please some, but well, U can't please everyone, but respect to those who are bold enough to not cash in on a working formula.

And this time, in 12 Lotus, in terms of music, I have a terrific working partner also involved in the soundscape of 12 Lotus, and that's Mr Ricky Ho. Before I even picked up a guitar, Ricky was already making waves in the Asian Mandarin music scene. With our works combined, the story in 12 Lotus unfolds not just thru the visuals, but in the aural experience, whether it's thru the song lyrics or thru the sensations U get thru Ricky's scoring or my FM team's arrangements…Hence I guess, making things not as straightforward as a normal movie, challenging the audience to engage both senses of sight and sound in order to appreciate and be touched by the movie 12 Lotus.

Actually this is what I thought about 2 days ago, but I didn't have time to post it. Today, I slept at 7am, but woke up at 830am just to have the honour of catching the movie with SM Goh. After watching the movie, SM Goh reaffirmed my thoughts regarding this, he felt that the movie is very powerful, and the evils of money is a very big and very real theme in this movie, and that is something real that anyone can relate to. He felt that we need a director willing to take risks, and not just jump on the bandwagon. He also said that this movie is not that commercial, but it will be a good film to challenge the mentality of Singaporeans towards local films.

This is something that I also strongly believe in, I feel that MOST Singaporeans love their entertainment in a bubble gum way, which means easily absorbed, but easily disposable and forgetten at anytime, whether it's in the form of music, design, movies, dance, all those creative stuff…But Singapore IS already building up and making noise in some parts of the creative industry, whether it's internationally or regionally, for e.g. in music(where we got Yanzi, JJ, still strong and not forgetting the behind the scene guys like Si Song Wei Song, Billy Koh, our FM gang, Xiaohan, Jim, me etc), in movies(Royston and his 20000 international film festival awards, and I still think Roy's, ban until cannot ban anymore in Singapore, movie, 15 is freaking brilliant, I was so happy when I met one of the actors last year, I was like I KNOW U!!!! Then he said I ALSO KNOW U!!! hahahah), the fashion industry etc.

With our acheivements, mostly abroad, I always thought it would be nice if fellow Singaporeans are willing to support their own kind, commerical or not, allowing them to be more creatively sophisticated in their absorbtion of our local talents.

And yeaahh, Daniel Yun, Tow Kay of Raintree, told me that SM Goh still remembers me coz I gave him my only copy of the 1st master test print of the 881 OST last year, so today I presented him and his wife the 12 Lotus OST, this time not CDR test print, but in it's full glory. He said last year the OST he hear waahh very 'song' but then before he knew it, the song ended, as it were all movie length songs. In which I replied yah lah! I heard about that, so this year, we steady one, the songs all record full full give u!!!

Mdm Goh and a few other friends in the theatre said they preferred 12 Lotus to 881, SM Goh feeling this movie is a powerful one, all these supportive but yet honest remarks made our whole team very relieved, happy and very grateful today. To which we shouted a few HUAT AHs! like mad dogs outside the theatre. 600 sister was of coz very happy, but feared that they appreciate the movie coz these people are all 'standard' one, as in high standard people laahh, and hence don't think like the buying mainstream public. I feel though they are all great leaders, but they are still no different from U and Me, as in we are all still mortal humans, only difference is they are born leaders. And when leaders lead, people will follow…

So yeaahh, test your senses, not just of sight, but of sound too, go check out 12 Lotus. Today. NOW! Don't say, wait for DVD…Coz on DVD, it won't be the same, besides the visual experience of watching in a theatre, U also definitely cannot experience the ah beng-ness of the sub bass coming from our techno beats at home.

So…Go watch hor? Support the local film industry lloorr, if U don't, who will?!

Singapore's enfant terrible filmmaker Royston Tan has finally proved his mettle with his latest film, 12 Lotus, an emotive and affecting tale of the human condition disguised as a fun song-and-dance film and melodrama. You will be moved by the tale of getai singer Lian Hua, and her tumultuous plight for love and her ultimate betrayal. This is TV drama material done with an arthouse sensitivity that Tan has achieved beautifully, after his initial struggles with previous films like 4:30, which also dealt with similar themes but failed because of its arty pretensions [sort of a like a B-grade Tsai Ming-liang (The Hole, I Don't Want To Sleep Alone) film]; and 881, which was entertaining and a box-office hit, but was frivolous and far too kitschy and overwrought. In 12 Lotus, Tan has managed to fuse his penchant for arthouse sensibilities with subjects and themes that are quintessentially Singaporean--a feat never achieved since Eric Khoo's cult film Mee Pok Man in 1995.

Told in two parts through 12 vignettes from traditional getai number "12 Lotus," the film begins with a young Lian Hua (Li Bao En) and her painful childhood: Discouraged from being a getai singer, she gets mistreated by her abusive father (TV actor Huang Li Yiang) from young, but with the help of Quang Yin (the Goddess of Mercy), manages to get through life and becomes a successful singer [played by an engaging Mindee Ong (881) in the adult role]. Her love interest in comes the form of fellow debonair getai performer Ah Long (a competent but bland Qi Yu Wu, The Home Song Stories), who also happens to be a liar and a cheat, and ultimately betrays her. The rest of the film, peppered with even more ballads and upbeat song-and-dance tunes courtesy of local composer Eric Ng (881), centers on the older Lian Hua [a funny Liu Ling Ling (881)], and her coming to terms with her condition.

Sure, 12 Lotus is very fun to watch just like 881, but it is its emotional and dramatic content that got to us. More than just a film about a tortured heroine who will never know the meaning of happiness, director Royston Tan also manages to bring forth deeper themes like fate, fraternity, inevitability, impermanence and solitaire [like the works of late Polish master filmmaker Krzysztof Kieslowski (Three Colors: Blue, White, Red), which Tan has cited as a major influence], albeit subtly here, and splash it with a Technicolor reverence to up its entertainment quotient. 12 Lotus is a masterful achievement of darkness and light, perhaps even more than the filmmaker will lead himself to believe.

This is Singapore ennui at its most affecting and heartbreaking, and quiet possibly, our best local film yet.

新传媒新闻报道，继电影《881》在本地掀起歌台热潮之后，导演陈子谦乘胜追击，在今年的农历七月推出新作品《12莲花》。他不但找来《881》的原班人马上阵，还亲自担任幕后代唱。

电影《12莲花》叙述歌台艺人莲花传奇的一生。导演陈子谦在记者会上说，虽然《12莲花》和《881》有些相似之处，但《12莲花》的故事内容更感人。

陈子谦表示，“因为《881》就是以歌台为主。那这次《12莲花》当然是有讲到歌台，但是歌台就是属于比较background 的感觉。”

新传媒艺人戚玉武这次不但一人饰演两个角色，还在电影里载歌载舞。不过，他也透露，其实他的幕后代唱另有其人。

戚玉武表示，“其实我有自己尝试过，只是因为我的福建话，当时拍的时候，事件方面不能给我这样长的时间去学福建话，所以到后来找导演来唱。”

刘玲玲表示，“我就跟导演说，导演，你为什么不自己来唱？你福建歌由这么熟，你的声音就这么性感，他说不要啦，我一个导演唱什么歌，我说你唱嘛，不要紧嘛，至少有歌，在宣传的时候，你也可以自己唱嘛。”

在《881》饰演小木瓜，一炮而红的王欣，最担心的就是脱离不了小木瓜的影子。

Singapore, 23 July 2008 – Local director Roytson Tan 陈子谦, together with co-producers MediaCorp Raintree Pictures, Scorpio East Pictures, and Infinite Frameworks, is proud to annouce that local Mando-pop songstress, Stefanie Sun 孙燕姿, will be appearing in the upcoming local musical blockbuster 12 LOTUS《十二莲花》!

Says her spokesperson, "Stefanie caught 881 last year and was impressed with what she saw and felt proud for what Royston did as a local director. Stefanie has always been supportive of local talents, so she jumped at this golden opportunity to work with Royston on his upcoming movie, 12 LOTUS."

Royston met with Stefanie and they worked out her part and costume. And with help from the production crew, she immersed herself into Royston's vision.

12 LOTUS tells the story of a singer and the heartless men in her life who use and abuse her. Spanning over 1980s, 1990s till the present day, this film will play out against the backdrop of poignant hokkien songs, which will touch audience with their resonance with the lead character.

12 LOTUS will be hitting the cinemas islandwide on 14th August 2008. The movie, co-produced by 10 TwentyEight Studios, MediaCorp Raintree Pictures, Scorpio East Pictures and Infinite Frameworks, is co-distributed in Singapore by Golden Village Pictures.

Golden Horse Awards Competition for Best Make Up & Costume Design (Dollei Seah & Moe Kasim) in the upcoming Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival.

The 2007 festival will be held in Taipei, Taiwan from 23rd November to 6th December whilst the 44th Golden Horse Awards Ceremony will take place on the 25th of November.

Raining Getai

Singing Getai in the rain with thousands of fans with umbrellas!!
I told you, when 881 cast appears, it always rains.
Na bei dunno why always like that..

That is the professional spirit of everyone, not afraid to die attitude. No choice, the cast is made up of mostly Ah lians, Lao lians & an Ah beng. Even non-beng Yu Wu also sporting.
881 cast sang for thousands of audiences waiting for our last performance. When Lingling appeared in her ultra fire-cracker dress, everyone like saw Cindy Crawford like that.
All went mad! Huat ah...

The Screening

881 screeening was a blast, the Korean audience were screaming when the cast arrived with costumes. We greeted the audience with an interesting intro.

Royston : There is a reason why we all have feathers in our costume. You will know when you see the film.

Yu Wu: There is a reason why I have no feathers at all on my clothes, because of the film.

Lingling: I have a lot of feathers today because I give feathers in the film. Who wants, I give you? (Audience screamed)

Mindee: Because Ling ling gives me feathers, I cannot kiss YuWu.

Karen: Lucky I've got no feathers. (Audience cheered)

We wanted to give them a greater surprise, we rushed back to hotel and changed to another outfit to surprise them. After the screening , they surprised me with two birthday cakes, one from the festival and one from the audience. it was like a riot, I'll let the pictures tell the story. Thank you Pusan.

Red Carpet

So this is the big day, 881 cast came with full ammunition to grace the red carpet!! But kena rain when we arrived. No choice Korean audience don't know what is Getai, so we bring Getai to them. They don't know us but still screamed, so huat ah to all of you.

A journalist mentioned in the KBS Live news that we were the most eye catching entourage on the red carpet. Festival director Kim Dong Ho and Programmer Kim Ji Seok greeted us with anticipation. Its been two years since I saw Mr. Kim Ji Seok, the man who discovered my work and encourages me from time to time, gave me a big hug and whispers to my ear, I'm so proud of you and I think you guys will be stealing the show tonight.

Here are some comments from the cast:

Lingling: I never walked a red carpet so long before, this outfit is specially for the festival, its such a thrill, its definitely the highlight of my life. I still have 10 different costumes on standby! heee hee.

Karen: I'm just so honoured and excited. I'm just a supporting cast, I did not expect the red carpet to be so long!

Mindee: To hear the 5000 audiences screaming for me,
I feel like a celebrity. I'm still lingering in excitement!!

Yu Wu: I feel very proud of myself and the film 881 because this is my first time coming to PIFF, I felt intoxicated with excitement and also because 881 is elevating to the international stage with warm reception.

Royston: Die!!!!! When my new expensive suit was damaged due to the rain, I don't know how to tell the sponsors but its ok, I'm comforted to see the cast of 881 gracing the red carpet with professionalism despite the heavy rain. Huat ah!

The latest Royston Tan vehicle receives blessings from the authorities and a dead singer.

He may not sway the local box office the way Jack Neo does, or enjoy an iconic status in the local filmmaking industry as Eric Khoo, but when it comes to making the headlines, no one can come close to the bad boy of Singapore cinema, Royston Tan. With only two movies under his belt - both of which are classified as art house films and sunk at the box-office as you would think that Tan's star as a filmmaker must have dipped into oblivion by now.

That cannot be further from the truth. One of Singapore's most celebrated auteur in the short film making circuit, Tan's foray into the big league of feature productions was just a matter of time. Even before he made his debut feature, he was already earmarked to become one of the rising stars in Asia's filmmaking constellation. His treasure trove of awards, coupled with his irrepressibly charming ways and candor, had around the same time, established him as a darling of the media.

The public and the local press lapped up every single accolade bestowed on him, at home and abroad, with nationalistic pride. The icing on the cake for Tan came in 2004, when Time Magazine named him as one of the "Top 20 Asian Heroes" - a feat even Tan finds difficult to top, to this day.

Apart from his own admission at once having a phobia of making features, nobody really doubted that Tan would eventually be making a living out of them. The turning point came in 2003, when he agreed to turn his multiple award winning short 15 - a gritty treatise on marginalized youths filled with vulgar dialogue and other expletives - into a feature of the same name. He recalls his decision to migrate to long-form story telling:

"I was getting too comfortable making short films, since I could churn one out in two months. I realized that I needed to challenge myself for further growth." Moreover, "the superstitious Tan continues, "when three different persons at different times had asked me of the same thing, that is to consider making features, I took that as a sign."

The movie eventually received 27 cuts and a Restricted (Artistic) rating by the Singapore censorship board, which essentially squashed any hopes of the movie doing well locally.

Not one to take things lying down, Tan rebounded with a 12-minute short entitled Cut, that satirizes the strict censorship laws in the Republic. To promote the film at festivals, the indefatigable Tan would don a bunny suit complete with sunglasses â€" a gregarious stunt indicative of the director's abilities to sell his movies.

For stirring the hornet's nest, that film earned Tan not only his street cred amongst peers but also a cult following almost overnight, not to mention cementing his position, if there were still lingering doubts, as the bad boy of Singapore.

The controversial piece was in Tan's own words, "a way of letting off steam." While unapologetic for it, he also attributes the well-documented saga to that of his 'paternal' instincts kicking in: "I regard each of my films as my baby and saw the need to do something to protect my own."

Who can blame him for protecting his own flock? Apparently nobody; not even unflinchingly rigid governmental bodies - or rather, they made an exception in the case of Royston Tan.

MDA bankrolls Tan's movie

Four years on, and if Tan's latest cinematic offering bears any indication, that whole episode with the powers that be appears to be water under the bridge. So patched up are things with MDA that the media regulatory body has partnered with four other investor parties to coinvest in Tan's latest musical film, 881.

Tan attributes the mended fences to Man Shu Shum, the director of broadcast and film development at MDA.

"Ever since Mr Man came on board, he has helped to bridge the gap between filmmakers and the bureaucrats. I think there is a lot of dialogue between the two groups now and a lot less misunderstanding.

Budgeted at around S$1 million, the five co-investors are producers Zhao Wei Films and Mediacorp Raintree Pictures, along with MDA, Scorpio East Pictures and Infinite Frameworks (IFW).

881 tells the story of The Papaya Sisters, played by Mindee Ong and Yeo Yann Yann. In fact, the story came about as a joke of an idea tossed around between the director and the two actresses. Tan recounts: "We were joking about how one day we would bring the 'getai' experience to a place like Australia, as part of a touring show. We were trying to find out what was uniquely Singapore and 'getai' came to mind straight away."

Getai, directly translated as Song Stage, are mini makeshift concerts staged in the seventh month of the Lunar calendar. Chinese people observe the seventh month with a festival known as the Hungry Ghost, a period during which the Gates of Hades are believed to be open; and when burnt offerings are made to the returning dead. These concerts, peculiar to Singaporeans, are meant to placate and entertain the souls who return from the netherworld.

Ever the savvy spokesperson for his films, Tan comments, "881 will be Singapore's first musical film and I hope to bring out the beauty of Hokkien songs and 'getai' through this brand new interpretation."

The genesis of this film is also linked to Singapore's 'getai' songwriting legend, Chen Jin Lang, who gave Tan his blessings to use his songs for the film barely weeks before he died of colon cancer. Chen had loved the premise of the script - which Tan completed writing in two weeks -and made an exception to see its author despite his ailing health.

Saddened by the singer's demise, Tan knew he had to document the funeral procession and change his script to pay homage to the 'getai' superstar. It didn't matter that the script had just been completed and probably endorsed by the film's investors, Tan made the changes almost at whim. Obviously, his creative clout was holding court, and other opinions had to wait.

Voice of the voiceless

From time to time, Tan would see himself as the bastion for the marginalized, and weave in stories of the lonely and destitute into his films. At risk of overstating the obvious, he iterates: "I always feel that there are stories to be told of people who are living on the fringe or have not been given a chance to vocalize themselves. I think that there are many roles that other directors can tackle but personally, I am interested in all these people."
Through 881, Tan hopes to bring to our attention, how Singapore's past heritage has been neglected and left behind by two metaphorical nemesis often explored in his films - progress and country laws. Somehow, his claims of being apolitical doesn't quite square here.

Although Tan concedes that Chen belonged more to his "parent's generation", he hopes to rekindle interest in the Hokkien dialect through the singer's legacy of music, hence reconnecting Singapore's younger generation to the once commonly spoken dialect. The outspoken director avers:

"Hokkien has been a dialect that has been repressed for a long time in the media. I believe it to be part of our culture that needs to be preserved. Once we lose our dialect, a part of us also dies."

Suddenly, you begin to realize Tan's sudden fixation with 'getai' and bringing it to the cinema screens. As if to confirm your suspicion, he continues: "Even for 'getai', I think it has never been accepted by mainstream Singaporeans, but rather I feel it has been alienated by the new generation."

Considering that Hokkien has largely been suppressed by the local authorities - that fear its widespread use could somehow derail efforts towards championing Mandarin as a second language â€" will a movie with 70 per cent dialect content fall foul of the censors?

"Not yet and we don't know what is going to happen. It has to go through no matter how. If it doesn't go through, I think there's something wrong with our system again," Tan replies whimsically, before hastening to add, "Obviously there are things that can always be improved. We are quite positive about this project because the ministers are quite excited over it. In fact, they requested for a first look at the film."

Asked for the ministers' names, Tan sheepishly relents: "Actually I cannot reveal which ministers..."

But before you even suggest such respect for bureaucratic protocols as a sign of Tan's weakness, as having to kowtow to the likes of MDA, he immediately corrects you: "I'll always be myself."

Being Royston It is precisely because he exudes such self-confidence, yet never bordering on cockiness, that the public finds Royston Tan such an affable personality.

Unlike Jack Neo who has years of show business behind him; and Eric Khoo with his multi-million dollar family estate, Tan's boy-next-door image is believably down-to-earth. His image of a rebellious teen who carved out a career to become one of Asia's most celebrated youth directors based on sheer talent, resonates with the hordes of admirers who look up to him as a role model. Despite a knack for getting into trouble with the authorities, he always seems have the last laugh. And for all his eyebrow raising antics, ultimately it is Tan's maneuvers behind the camera that have earned him a cult reputation that has very few peers.

The 30-year-old has won over 54 international and local film awards for his work to date. In 2001, he won the 6th MVA ASEAN Director of the year, Silver Award. In 2002, the Singapore National Arts Council named him Young Artist of the year. In 2003, Netpac Jury recognized Royston Tan as one of Asia's most promising talents. And the list of accolades go on...
While he may not be the most prolific of directors, what with only three features to his credit, he certainly enjoys the profile of a director with many more years in the business. How else could his name and that famous rebel persona inspire a feature movie simply titled "Becoming Royston" In having his name invoked for the title of a film, Tan replies almost nonchalantly:

"I'm not perfect, I have my own weaknesses too yet they see that as strength. It becomes an encouragement for me to move on."

Uttered by anyone else, those words may be construed to make the speaker seem pompous - or at best, schmaltzy - but in the lips of Royston Tan, you can rest assure that any negative connotations will eventually fall by the wayside.

For as MDA and many of his detractors have found out, you can't stay mad at Royston Tan for too long.

Did you enjoy the film 881?

Ans: Yes. very much. The musical has all the elements of a Broadway hit. It is humorous, entertaining, poignant, with good singing and lots of action. The rejection of Big Papaya by her mother over her desire to be a getai singer and Little Papaya's struggle with cancer, pain and death will cause many to shed a silent tear. My four-year old grand-daughter cried when Qi Yuwu traded his pet rooster to raise money for the last performance in Little Papaya's life. There is even a whiff of romance. Some of my friends have gone to see the show upon my encouragement. They enjoyed it.

Does 881 capture a heritage of Singapore?

Ans: Getai has become part of the Lunar Seventh Month rituals and festivities. There will always be a segment of our population who believe in what I call the traditional religions. They observe the rituals of the Hungry Ghosts month. Getai adds to the colour and diversity of Singapore, and seems to have taken the place of Teochew wayang. The latter has difficulties in recruiting performers and may disappear from our local cultural scene. It will be good if getai can help to preserve Singapore's street-level cultural heritage and not go down memory lane one day.

Press Conference:

The press conference for 881, which was held at the Singapore History Museum, saw a huge turnout from the media. All in attendance were treated to a 'getai' themed press conference, with performances from Mindee, Yannyann, Lingling, May and Choy. Entertaining all with their respective song & dance routines, Funkie Monkies' duo, Ngak & Jiahui also gave a performance of their own, to a very receptive audience. A surprised item was unveiled when the director himself, Royston Tan did a number from his film, accompanied by Qi Yuwu.

Roadshows:

Immediately after the press conference, the 881 roadshow was kicked off as Royston & the full casts travelled to the event locations in style. An 881 themed pick-up van ferried them from the museum to the various locations, as the casts, equipped with loudhailers & extravagant costumes, stood at the back of the pick up van promoting their movie along orchard road. The team then set off to the event locations at The Heeren & Plaza Singapura's the Atrium where meet the cast sessions was held with performances and contests.

Mindee's Injury 01.08.07.

Actress Mindee Ong suffered eye and back injuries when two assailants on a motorbike pelted eggs at Royston & the casts during their travel to the 881 roadshow at The Atrium, Plaza Singapura. The director & casts were traveling on the 881 pick-up van from The Heeren as the two men slowed down beside the 881 van before launching a vile attack on the casts. On the motorbike that had its number plate covered (white tape), the two lowly men were chased by a crew car before losing their marker about 1 km away. The roadshow still went on as planned with a very determined Mindee bent on not allowing the incident to affect her morale. Fortunately for Royston, he managed to escape with a minor bruise but it wasn't so for Mindee. The egg shell got into her left eye, which later had to be bandaged. Also, Mindee subsequently developed an eye infection the very next day.

Latest: Royston Tan's Monkeylove was awarded the grand prize at the just concluded 5th edition of "Signs of Night" film festival in Paris. This is Monkeylove's 4th award since its' release in 2006 and 2nd Grand Prix Prize, enjoying both wins in France.
Speaking exclusively to the bodyguard from Melbourne, Australia, Royston said that "again I guess this means more for monkeyboy, being his favourite country [France] and also having won it twice in the same country. He also added that its "a revisiting experience for Monkeyboy". On what Monkeylove's success means to him, Royston said, "I'm just glad how a simple film with a simple message can touch so many people".

Royston Tan's gig debuts in Central Park, New York City.

Accompanied by two of his lead actresses Mindee Ong & Yeo Yann Yann, it was Royston Tan's debut performance in front of a large scale audience and what better way to do it then in New York City's Central Park. Used to being labelled the 'bad boy of Singapore films', Royston Tan certainly did not extend that tag to his concert-style performance in which over 6000 people attended.

"Singing in Hokkien is very difficult. I have to get the intonation and accent right,' said Royston.

The filmmaker performed a getai (in Hokkien no less) for his segment as part of Singapore Day with songs from his upcoming musical feature film, 881.

881 A Royston Tan Film

The bad boy of Singapore cinema is back, with his biggest film project yet, a $1million musical feature film in a joint production between five companies. The talented Singapore director's next film will be set against the colourful and culturally unique backdrop of Chinese 7th month 'getai'.

Singapore, 7 February 2007 – Zhao Wei Films, MediaCorp Raintree Pictures, Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA), Scorpio East Pictures and Infinite Frameworks (IFW) are proud to announce that they will be collaborating to produce talented Singapore director, Royston Tan's next feature film, 881.

881 tells the story of The Papaya Sisters, played by Mindee Ong (Moulmein High, Birthday) and Yeo Yann Yann (Singapore Dreaming), two childhood friends who grew up mesmerised by the glitter and glamour of 'getai' (song stage). The musical will feature glitzy costumes and lavish choreography, with the actors breaking out often into songs to express their emotions. All the numbers in the film are from the treasure trove of the late Chen Jin Lang, a Singapore 'getai' songwriting legend who passed away in August 2006. MediaCorp artiste Qi Yu Wu (The Peak) and 'getai' veteran Liu Ling Ling will also star in the film.

The director, Mr Royston Tan, comments "881 is my third film and as a director, I have always wanted to surprise people with different ways of storytelling. 881 will be Singapore's first musical film and I hope to bring out the beauty of Hokkien songs and 'getai' through this brand new interpretation. The film will infuse 'getai' elements with modern cutting edge editing style, and let audiences see 'getai' in a different light".

The five partners will co-invest in the film, budgeted at around S$1 million, with Eric Khoo's Zhao Wei Films and MediaCorp Raintree Pictures serving as producers. Infinite Frameworks will provide post-production support, including visual effects and design. To be shot on High Definition (HD), the film will be in Mandarin and Hokkien. Production is expected to commence in early March and will be co-distributed by Scorpio East Pictures and Golden Village Pictures in Singapore in the 3rd quarter of 2007 when completed.

Mr Eric Khoo, Director of Zhao Wei Films, comments "I have been a great admirer of Royston's short musical films and it brings me much joy that he is finally making a full length song and dance number, 881!".

"MediaCorp Raintree Pictures has been working with local directors long before we started on our collaborations with regional filmmakers. We have worked with Eric, Jack, and Kelvin among others. Recently we have also started to work with first time directors for regional co-productions. I have always wanted to work with Royston. With this project, we are not only working with Royston for the first time; it is also our first venture into a musical. Besides this genre which is challenging in every aspect of filmmaking, the subject matter is very close to my heart. I hope we can add value to bringing Royston and his movie to a wider audience both within Singapore and to the key global markets. It is also a pleasure to work with Eric Khoo and his team again and we are very happy to have the support of the MDA" says Mr Daniel Yun, Managing Director of MediaCorp Raintree Pictures.

In the winter landscape of Hokkaido, a guy in a monkey suit is searching for lost love. A meditation on life and art, love and longing, "Monkey Love" is lyrical, enigmatic, pensive, whimsical and spare - like a haiku.

The Royston Tan short film, Monkeylove has yet bagged another award, this time at the 29th edition of the Clermont-Ferrand Internation Short Film Festival in France. Competing in Clermont-Ferrand's 6th Lab Competition against 45 other films from 22 countries, Monkeylove was awarded the top prize of the competition, the Grand Prix. It's the second time Royston Tan has won in Clermont, the first one for "Cut" in 2005 when it won the canal + award.

Monkeylove's award signifies a truly momentous landmark for Royston, as it marks his 50th(intl & local) award as a filmmaker/director.

The Lab Competition:
"..today's evolution of digital technology has caused art forms linked to the moving image to shine out in a cluster of forms, styles and trends. This contemporaneous multiplicity, where formats that were deemed obsolete – like Super 8 for instance - are actually being made new use of, serves as a melting pot for frictions and bypasses generating new energies. Our Lab competition is an invitation to journey through these newly created territories."

Royston Tan kick start the new year with the Singapore filmmaker's showcase, a school touring programme with his short films. Fifth year in the running & touring more then 80 schools with the objective of introducing short filmmaking as a medium for youths. Celebrating its fifth year anniversary, we would like to express our gratitude from various schools which encouraged the team to continue believing and improving the showcase.

Opera auntie shouting 6:45pm! Its make-up time, I sat down with my big mineral water. Auntie Feng bought me a shared pot of rice. “When you are with us you eat what we eat.” My hand was trembling while I was applying eyeliner on my eyes. A few rounds of rehearsals were done behind the curtain to perfect the sword fighting scene… curtain call. Tonight I was told that I have to stand firm throughout the performance. I took my last drag of cigarette and went on the stage; I did my ‘san tong’ waiting for the general to be on stage. My mind drifted to somewhere else, to the nonchalant musician, to the curious audience who was discussing who this new actor was in the troop.

Costume changed, the troop leader gave me another ciggie, and his way of saying I’m doing fine. I'm now bought to scene 17 where I had to stab the prince, with 5 other assassinators, He sing a melancholy tune which resent life, and he tried to reach out to his princess. We were to stay still with our weapons. I saw the prince tear, uncontrollably I quietly did. Removing the makeup, I'm back to being Royston playing the role I ought to be. Something stops and starts.

“You coming tomorrow?”
“No I have to shoot a film.”
“Then come when you can, we miss you.”

Filmmaking to me have always been like being in a love relationship, you go through a series of intense experience, you laugh, you cry, you empathize with each other and when the film is finally done, you feel a sense of relief concocted with melancholy. The film is done, the love relationship is over. We started to reminisce, to hold on to what was left. Something stops and starts.

“We have performance tomorrow, you can make it?”
“Not for a while. Do inform me when you are performing.”

Dec 29th near AZ building, our first performance after a long time.

Royston Tan's '4:30' scooped the best film awards at the 8th IFF BRATISLAVA 2006 (Slovak Republic) and the 4th ROME Asian Film Festival, on the same day.

Royston Tan’s “4:30” wins two top awards at 8th IFF Bratislava and the 4th Rome Asian Film Festival on the same day

11 December 2006 – It was double happiness for Royston Tan as his second feature “4:30” won the Grand Prix Award for Best Film at the International Film Festival Bratislava (Slovakia Republic) as well as the Best Film Award at the Rome Asian Film Festival, both on Sunday. “4:30” tells the story of Xiao Wu, a lonely eccentric 12- year old latchkey kid and his fascination with the male Korean tenant in his apartment, getting up at 4:30am everyday to spy on him.

Antonio Termenini, festival director of the Rome Asian Film Festival said, “The jury felt that the film was able to express the theme of the incommunicability in the modern society and that the film considers the universe of the youth".

“4:30” won the Best Film Award beating other films like “I Don’t Want to Sleep Alone” by Tsai Ming Liang, “Exiled” by Johnnie To, “Loft” by Kiyoshi Kurosawa and “The Peter Pan Formula” by Cho Chang Ho.
Over at the IFF Bratislava, the film bagged the Grand Prix Award for Best Film. Roman Gutek member of the jury said, “I’ve been aware of his works (short films and first feature film) over the years and the jury awarded the film for the pervasive depiction of Man's loneliness, who despite it, is able to sustain his human integrity.
The Grand Prix Award is given under the First and Second Feature Film Competition and this year there are a total of twenty entries spanning from countries like Romania, Italy, Argentina, Denmark, Russia, China, France and Germany. The award is presented to first and second time feature film directors.

“It’s wonderful that “4:30” can get this recognition and it’s the first time that I’ve actually won two awards at the same time at two different places, so it’s exhilarating for me. It’s not been a really good year for me personally so I am glad I can take this as the start of a new beginning for next year”, said Royston Tan.

He also adds, “430 is a film made from the perspective of a child, so when I received the award at Bratislava to a standing ovation from the audience, I felt like a child getting his candy, the sweets of his labour”.

SIN SAI HONG
A film by Royston Tan (Singapore)

The opening of the National Museum of Singapore presents an opportunity to explore the varying perspectives that contemporary cultural practitioners and artists have adopted in response to issues of tradition and history.

Specially commissioned by the National Museum of Singapore as part of the opening festival, Sin Sai Hong is a short film which documents the Sin Sai Hong troupe, the oldest Hokkien opera troupe in Singapore.

The film captures the iconic songs and music of the troupe that are familiar favourites with Chinese audiences in Singapore for over four generations. Lyrical in its execution, the film illustrates the different eras of the troupe through the performance of their songs.

At the same time, it also offers rare glimpses into the backstage area, where the lives of the musicians, stage hands and singers often mirror the stories of the songs they perform.

Royston Tan followed and volunteered himself as an extras over a year in preparation for this film. This film premiere will be graced by the entire Sin Sai Hong troupe.

Director's Statement.

The opera troupe Sin Sai Hong has been around close to a hundred years. I recall my grandmother having used to carry me as a kid to watch the opera performances. This troupe was known for its fanciful costumes and singing, but what made this troupe so special was despite falling crowd, it continued to maintain its high standard of performances year after year. After seeing the near disappearance of the Teo Chew troupe, I felt an urgency to capture their dedication before it disappeared. To prepare myself for the film, I volunteered myself as a soldier over the past one year to immerse myself in the troupe for inspiration; it’s at the backstage where I experienced the intimate, closed bonded and candid moments of their conversations, rehearsals and discussions, leading to the concept of this film taking place mostly at the backstage. By requesting every troupe members to select a song very personal to them in their performing career, this 35mins film shows you the early development of the Hokkien opera tune from the Nan Ying era to the 80s Taiwanese and present pop influences over four generations. The opera actress Ah Cai told me that "going on stage resembles life, once you are out on stage, do it well, you can't remake an entrance".

47th International Thessaloniki Film Festival

Under the section of Independence Days which is dedicated to new and emerging talents from all over the world, this year the 46th International Thessaloniki Film Festival in Greece organised a tribute to Royston Tan's full body of work. The tribute is under the the permanent spotlight Someone to Watch , hosted by the Independence Days section, dedicated to new directors and uprising talents .

The greek correspondent had a casual chat to Festival programmer Leftaris Adamidis

•How do you get to know Royston Tan?

It was crazy, I first met him at the brief encounter film festival in bristol. He was in a rabbit costume and I thought he is a very interesting guy. Rarely you see directors in animal costume! (laughs)

•Is that why Royston Tan was chosen to be featured in the 47th International Thessaloniki Film Festival ?

More so because he is crazy! Just kidding. We are constantly on the lookout for young promising talents, & Royston Tan incoporates so many styles in every of his films, its something uncommon coming from singapore. For "15", its cutting edge and fast paced, "4:30" extremely quiet and mediatative and "Cut", I die laughing!!!!!!! .

•How do you think the audience will react to his films since its all so different?

Our team are anxious as the films were all so different and its important to present all his films, we want to let the audience decide.

•And Yes all his films are in numbers....
Yes! that was a bit of drama, i had a big fight with my graphic designer as when you put' 15' and "4:30" in a programme schedule, its looked really confusing with all these numbers when its put together with all the other films, the graphic team insisted spelling out the number, I said no as i knew how significant it was to use numeric in Royston's film. So that was a crazy episode.

•Describe Royston in one word?

Serious. (Suddenly everyone in the whole room started laughing)

•Any last words?
I am totally regretful for not requesting him to bring his rabbit costume, its is known that whenever "CUT" is shown in any countries, a specially designed rabbit costume for the country its showing, like the one he wore in russia, mexico and japan. I'm anxious too see how a greek rabbit will look like... Sigh... I take full responsiblity for not requesting it!!!

•Seriously any finally last words?
Why didn't I ask him to bring the rabbit costume!

Missing Person Report Filed.
On the 17th of September 2006, whilst on a trip to Japan, Mr. Royston Tan went missing for several hours. He was last seen at the Fukuoka Film Festival. The bodyguard's 1000-strong search & rescue personnel were deployed with immediate effect. The air, sea & land operations continued for several hours, during which an intelligence received from an anonymous source stated the return of Mr. Royston Tan. Quoted saying "the day i saw dustbins and umbrellas flying in the air", he appeared fully drenched but with a mobile film...

At least nine people died and 269 people were injured, some seriously, after powerful Typhoon No. 13 battered Kyushu on Sunday, disaster management authorities said.The typhoon blew out into the Sea of Japan at about 8 a.m. after hitting Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture, at around 6 a.m., the Meteorological Agency said.

Monkeyboy's Farewell.

Hiroaki Muragishi passed away in a swimming mishap in a river in the Kouchi prefecture on 13 August 2006.
He was the actor in "Monkey Love". In this short, he was a sad orange simian on a quest to recover his heart, which had been stolen. We never did find out if he accomplished his mission, as his determined little figure vanished into the vastness of winter. All we know is he has a clue in the form of a lighter. "Just remember," the mountain told him. We have a lighter now, too. Its flame flickers on the screen of our minds and in the darkness of theaters where tired souls have always flocked to seek succor, a yellow bauble of warmth against an endless requiem of white.

Royston: what makes you happy?
Hiroaki: When I go to a river near my university, my brother and I used to play there as when we were young.
Royston: what makes you sad?
Hiroaki: When I knew that my love ones is far away from me.
Royston: i'll see you tomorrow...
Hiroaki: OK, see you...

the Story Behind That Scene.

A familiar figure approached me.
"Hello", he said.
"Is that you?" I asked.
"Yes, remember the time when we met on the set of 'The Teenage
Textbook" movie?" he said.
"Of course i do," i replied.
"It's been 10 years", he reckoned.
"I hope it won't take another 10 years for us to meet again," I laughed.
"Remember how i always broke your cigarette into half everytime to
save you 3 mins of your life?" He smiled.
"Yes I do, and it's in 4:30 the film", I replied.
"Really?" he wondered.

3 seconds of silence.
I see a sparkle in his eyes.
It's amazing the little things you do in life that can resonate for a
whole lifetime.

5 mins to go before going on stage for "4:30", Hewison was smiling in black. No one slept through out the film, Geoffrey Rush smoking before our acelelator's talk. The temperature was 9 degrees and sweet Elise was warming me with her smile with 28 other friendly faces. Singaporeans queueing in anticipation, can't quite remember if we met before. "I know you through your films", they said. Final check - 2 monkey suits for the all-star animal show intro for my short films screening for Melbourne International Film Festival.

In conjunction with the release of Royston Tan's second feature film, 4:30, the Gala Premiere was held at Shaw House's Lido Cineplex on 22 June 2006.

Besides the Gala Premiere, another highlight of the evening was the presentation of an exquisite Raymond Weil Tango Chronograph Timepiece to Royston by Mr Tan Soo Khoon, Managing Director of Crystal Time Singapore, the sole distributor of Raymond Weil in Singapore.

To recognize Royston Tan's contribution & dedication to the local art scene, Raymond Weil, an avid supporter of Arts & Culture (especially of Music & Visual Arts) has inducted Royston Tan (Singapore) into the "Raymond Weil Hall Of Fame" by presenting a Raymond Weil Tango Sports Chronograph timepiece in a ceremony during a Cocktail Reception at 4:30's Gala Premiere on 22nd June 2006.

The exclusive timepiece was specially flown in for the ceremony and Royston will be the first in Singapore to own a Tango Sports Chronograph in Singapore, as the Tango Sports Chronograph is not in local retails stores yet.

A compilation of 13 Royston Tan's short films released in a dvd collection, 'Royston's Shorts' was launched recently at HMV & Kinokuniya.

Both launches were highly successful with sessions of entertaining director's interviews, short films showcases & extended autograph sessions.

Fans with multiple copies of the dvd were a common sight, with many requesting for multiple autographs on the dvds, posters and flyers. It did not stop there. Fans also requested for a song which Royston obliged, singing four verses from his short film, Careless Whisperer.
